Northwest 2003

Northwest Vacation 2003

Once again, I headed north for my summer vacation, only this time I decided to spend more time at the places I enjoyed most in the previous year's trip—namely Crater Lake and Mendocino, only this time we did them in reverse order.

Three days at Crater Lake and two at Mendocino resulted in the following photographic highlights.  (Still using just the Fuji Finepix camera, however.)  Since in my opinion these pictures showed a market improvement in my technique, I feel a little more confident about posting larger versions here.

Confession time: I did make a few Photoshop adjustments to some of these pictures, especially if brightness and/or contrast needed help.

Click on the thumbnails to see the photos; most are 300-500kb in size for the download.  As with the 2002 photos, if you're looking at these and see any you like, and would be interested in seeing the full-resolution versions, drop me a line.  I also have many more that didn't quite make the cut to get on this page.

Crater Lake, Oregon. The yellow streaks, I'm told, are actually due to tree pollen. This is indeed the actual unretouched shade of blue I saw.

Crater Lake's western crescent, showing snow, trees, and a portion of the Watchman Overlook

Crater Lake-Devil's Backbone and Llao Rock (black and white).

Crater Lake's Phantom Ship (extreme telephoto). We were unable to view from the eastern side of the rim, because the roads were closed due to snow.

Spintered tree near the Crater Lake Lodge.

A tenacious tree, clinging atop rocks near Crater Lake.

Two rather Ent-ish looking trees at Crater Lake, almost looks like they're holding hands.

Early evening at Crater Lake, with cap-clouds pouring over the rim.

Another picture of the clouds pouring over the rim.

Sunset at Crater Lake, with the clouds moving in.

The Pinnacles at Crater Lake, downslope and well south of the rim. This area is soft volcanic rock eroded by wind and water.

Now to Mendocino, California-The rocky beach west of Main Street, at low tide.

Another view of the rocky shoals at low tide, at Mendocino. (This was one of the photos picked up by Aladdin Books, also one from 2002 at high tide.)

Water above, exposed seaweed in the middle, and clam beds near the bottom, all at low-tide. (Another of the photos picked up by Aladdin Books.)

A closer look at the seaweed at Mendocino. Almost like little aliens. (Another of the photos picked up by Aladdin Books.)

Rocks and clam beds, from the cliff-top at Mendocino. (Another of the photos picked up by Aladdin Books.)

An interesting bit of washed up driftwood, probably a redwood stump, now a photographic opportunity.

Black and white photo of the end of that same piece of driftwood, with amazing details and swirls in the base of the log.

Lots and lots of abalone clams... (Yep, Aladdin Books liked this one, too.)
