The benefits of OCD*

*By OCD, I am referring to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

There can, in fact, be an upside to certain kinds of OCD behavior.  For me, I have two compulsions, only one of which I get to indulge regularly.  The first of these two compulsions is to get things done.  What I mean by this, is that once I’ve started on a project, it is very, very, very, VERY hard for me to stop until the project is 100% complete.

I also have a touch of perfectionism, which means that 100% for me is probably 120-150% for most everybody else.

It literally makes me anxious and crazy, to start on some project or task and leave it halfway done.  Or say, for example, I’m cleaning a mirror.  I can’t just wipe it with a dry cloth, maybe leave a few smears where nobody will notice.  No, I’ll get the window cleaner and do a proper job of it.

Which leads me to my other compulsion: To clean and tidy.  I really like to have a clean, tidy, orderly, and spotless home.

Put these together?  It means that when I get a chance, I turn into a cleaning demon.  I get started, and I can’t stop.  I’ve literally spent the last two days going from end to end in this little ashram apartment — dusting, sorting, stacking, organizing, scrubbing, and… well, everything.  I even battled and slew the giNORmous dust bunnies under the bed.  I found dust and grit in places I didn’t even know we had.  I mopped and scrubbed and reorganized the kitchen cabinets.  It’s scary.

Now, the place is looking damned spiffy…and probably way too tidy for my spouse.  Ah well, she’ll be back from Bangalore in a couple days.

Oh, I should mention — this hyper-cleaning thing of mine is best indulged when she’s not around.  Why?  Because she’d make me stop…oh, probably within the first two or three hours.  *lol*

Another advantage is it’s really easy to establish ‘healthy’ habits like a regular exercise routine. Do it for a week and it becomes an ‘I gotta do this’ thing.

True that… Before we left for India, I’d regularly get into 6.5mi walk/runs up and down the very steep hill we lived on. After doing it for a few days, I couldn’t keep from doing it…even when I shouldn’t (like having pulled a muscle, or it being too brutally hot). Just HAD to go.

I gotta get a ‘regular exercise routine’ going again, but it’s kinda hard here at the ‘shram.

    cheers!

  3. I too will get the glass cleaner rather than just wiping off the dirty spot.

I found your blog during an image search and the grand canyon shot that conservapedia copied came up and I saw your note to the, clueless, moronic, lawless wankers, …. then I had to learn a little more.

As moronic as conservatives are generally, there may be something (not everything) to the “fictional deluge”. And that something may have everyting to do exactly why most of this nation is clueless.

Are you aware of thi interview with Norman Dodd?

If you are, what knowledge do you think was removed from the American knowledge base back in the 1920′s when the guggenheim foundation gathered funding from all over the world to replace Americas educational base.

I think I know, and it has to do with that canyon and why the infiltrators of the US government think they can get away wiht 9-11.

    Hello Chris–

*shrugs* Whether any sort of deluge of ‘biblical proportions’ happened or not, there is plenty of evidence to show that the Grand Canyon was formed over the course of eons — not scoured out in 40 days.

As for the other point, I would suggest that perhaps you’re thinking from a parochial America-centric view. The rest of the world vastly outnumbers America, and so except for outright and blatant Luddite-like denial of science, there is not much opportunity for knowledge to have become as corrupted as your friend, Mr. Dodd, says.

Truth is truth, and although it can be covered for a time, eventually it always comes out. It may take years or decades, but eventually the truth always wins.

Now, I think we’re discovering just how abominably criminal the so-called “neo-cons” and their allies (the Bushes, the GOP, and the moneyed radical right wing) have been. Yes, many of us have known or suspected…but now the actual details are coming to light. Can you imagine it? America’s highest office holders in the Executive branch, literally sitting around a table to decide what tortures to inflict on prisoners? It boggles the mind…
